I have lined up a JD 4600 that comes nicely equipped and at a good price but it has Turf tires and I expect that I will want R4s (Somw work in the woods pulling logs, brush hog work, hoe and FEL work in piles etc). Can anyone tell me the cost of swapping tires? Do I need new wheels? Will the Truf tires work well in the woods if I use chains? (Sorry about the Subject heading ... I typed "ag" by mistake ...should have been "Turf")

My Deere brochure says the 4600 uses 20 inch rear rims and 15 inch front rims with turfs. The R-4'S are listed as 24 inches on the rear and 16.5 on the front. You can go to the JD web site under parts, sign in and get list prices. Make sure you are sitting down and it helps if no one else is in the house to hear you scream.
As to chains and turfs, I've seen a whole lot of logging equiptment with x and z pattern chains over R-4's. But they are not cheap in these sizes either. ....

The rear wheels are all different on the 3 common tire types:
Turf tires use a one-piece wheel.
The R-1's and R-4's use a 2-piece wheel consisting of a center dish and a rim. The center disk is common to both R-1 and R-4, but the R-4 uses a wider rim than the R-1.
So if you really want to switch tire types, you will need the wheels and tires.
I recently checked on cost of the R-4 rims only (no center disk): $160 each. Also looked at some Goodyear radial R-4's with aggressive tread: $430 each. And $50/hour to mount -- that ain't chickenfeed when you have double rear wheel weights to contend with.
The chains would provide decent traction in the woods and less traction inside your wallet.

Ag tires would be cheaper to install and would give better performance than the r-4's in the woods and field. They do not work well at all on the lawn. If you could keep the turfs, go ag. ....
